Getting to Sydney, Australia

Located on the southern coast of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, beckons lovers of fun and adventure. Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport is the largest international and domestic airport in Oz. Many international airlines from major global destinations land in Sydney Airport. It is the oldest continually running commercial airport in the world.
Unlike other airports in Australia, it has connections to every continent in the world. European and Middle Eastern travellers fly in via Asia. South American travellers fly in via North America or New Zealand. If you choose to fly to Sydney from other parts of Australia, Melbourne and Brisbane are about an hour and a half away, and Canberra is approximately 45 minutes away. Flying in from Perth would take about four hours.
Fifteen minutes south of the central business district in Botany Bay is Sydney’s main airport. A smaller airport is located further away in Bankstown. Airport transfers are easy to come by and a train service takes travellers directly to the city. Cars can be rented from the airport. Or if you prefer, you can take one of the local buses or hop onto one of the mini-buses that take groups to various hotels for a nominal fee. There is also a train service connecting the airport to the central business district of Sydney. Taxis are easily available, albeit quite expensive. A $2 airport tax is levied in addition to the meter charges, as well as a $5 eastern distributor toll. For groups of two or more people, a taxi may turn out to be cheaper overall since other forms of transport charge per head.
The Pacific Highway has been recently renovated for a better driving experience between the Hume Highway in the north and the Federal Highway in the south. It takes about three hours to drive into Sydney from Canberra and approximately ten hours to drive in from Melbourne. Rental cars are available all over Sydney as well as the suburbs.
A bus service runs between Sydney and other Australian centers, terminating at the bus depot at Central Station. This is often the most convenient and cost-effective mode of travel within Oz.
Interstate and intercity trains carry travelers to Central Station. Due to the difference in the size of the tracks in Queensland compared to those in New South Wales, there is no train service available from Queensland unless you switch to a bus near the border.
Bondi to Coogee Walk: Sydney on Display

The Bondi to Coogee Walk extends for about 6-kilometers from Bondi South to Coogee in Sydneys eastern suburbs. It takes about 2-hours from Bondi to Coogee, that is just a steady pace walking, at a reasonable pace without too many stops. Most people, like to just draw that out a little bit. There are a stack of places that you can stop, places for a swim, for a coffee, for drinks, something to eat along the way, so if you prefer you can draw it out and take up to half a day or longer if you like.
I prefer to make the walk twice, say if you started at Bondi, walk all the way to Coogee, stop there for lunch or a quiet drink in one of the restaurants or cafes there, then turn around and walk back in the afternoon. This can make a very pleasant habit.
The Bondi to Coogee Walk is very easygoing, and, you don not need too many intensive preparations. The walk is well sign posted, its pathways all the way, so you can not really get lost. There are plenty of places to stop for food and drink along the way. The going is pretty straightforward, there is some uphill and there is some downhill, but nothing too strenuous for your average person of reasonable fitness.
What are you likely to see if you travel the Bondi to Coogee Walk? Well, if you start at Bondi, you will walk past the Bondi Icebergs, and pass to the south up onto Mackenzies Point. This is a point that looks over to the North, so you can see North and South Bondi, to the south you can look all the way down to Maroubra Beach in the distance. There are some pretty spectacular views, and if you have a look around up there at Mackenzies Point, there are actually some old aboriginal carvings of a whale.
It takes some looking around or asking around, but these are amongst the first Aboriginal carvings that were reported in Australia.
If you keep walking south and you enter a gradual downhill, and the very beach first that you will come down to is called Tamarama. This beach is also known as Glamarama because of the large abundance of movie stars and the rich and famous that like to hang around there. This is a very small beach, used mostly by locals, and the well to do.
Tamarama has a little bit of surf there and at times it can be a little bit rough and dangerous. Tamarama is a patrolled beach in a nice spot.
If you keep walking south past Tamarama, you are up a gentle rise, over the crest and down into a beautiful beach called Bronte Beach. This is my favorite of the beaches that you will likely encounter on the Bondi to Coogee Walk. Bronte is a very picturesque beach. It is nowhere near as big as Bondi, but its got a very large grassed area immediately behind it on the promenade. It has a particularly large surf, but again, it is well patrolled and if you swim between the flags, you should not have too many problems.
Bronte Beach has a large cafe strip as well, there are some great cafes up there along the southern side. It is a great spot to stop for breakfast or coffee, if you are that way inclined.
Once you finish through Bronte, you will keep walking south and you will notice only the side that the rock has been carved away to make way for the road. The walls are 15 to 20 feet high on either side. That is where the trams used to be back at the turn of the century. That rock was moved away so the tram line could run to Bronte Beach.
Waverley Cemetery has got to be the cemetery on the most expensive real estate in Sydney. It is a really dramatic coastline, and the views are amazing, so just looking along the ocean you will see this very large cemetery over quite a few acres, on your right hand side. Waverley cemetery is home to a lot very famous Australian People like Henry Lawson, a famous Australian Poet, Victor Trumper, who played a fair bit of Cricket and was batsman of some renown, Lawrence Hargrave, Henry Kendall, and many others have found their final resting places at Waverley Cemetery.
Past Waverley Cemetery is Clovelly, which is a small but very sheltered beach. There is not much to surf there at all, so if you are into much more of a calm paddle then Clovelly is the spot to stop for you. Stop for a bit of swim there, there is also an ocean pool as well, where you can get in and have a look.
After you cross the car park at Clovelly, you will walk up some reasonably steep stairs and from the top of the stairs, you walk down and into Gordons Bay. Gordons Bay is an interesting place. There is not really a spot for swimming, there is no beach, but it is a very popular snorkeling and scuba diving area.
There is an underwater nature trail, so if you like Scuba diving, Gordons Bay is actually a really good, convenient local spot in Sydney. You follow a chain around there, and it is a very good dive. The dive is fairly shallow and divers probably would not get much more than 12-meters in depth. This means from your average tank you will get around an hour on the bottom.
Finally if you walk down to Gordons Bay and crest you will come down into Coogee and Coogee Beach. This is a great spot, which you will approach from the north, down into Coogee Beach. There are lots of cafes, lots of restaurants, lots of hotels, good places to stop for a beer, something to eat and everything else you could desire. From Coogee you can turn around and walk back if you like, or you can get a Bus 353 back to Bondi Beach.
If you really want to do what the locals do, then get amongst the Coogee to Bondi Walk because it is a great walk and a great way to showcase some of the eastern beaches of Sydney.
Gold Rush on Gold Coast, Queensland
Queensland’s Gold Coast, Australia looks set to continue its recent growth: the announcement of a $100 million airport facelift will be coping with the ever-increasing demand for tourism, business and investment into the area. Experts predict the population will grow by over 50% in the next 15 years and, along with a shortage of quality real estate in the area, prices can only be going one way…
Propertyshowrooms.com Business and Media Manager, Peter Mindenhall, said, “After analysis of the company’s traffic figures for the beginning of the year, the interest in our property in Australia has increased dramatically: enquiries for January were up by over 125% on the monthly average for last year, with most of the enquiries coming in for Queensland´s Gold Coast and Sydney.”
“The main focus however appears to be on The Gold Coast which is currently enjoying a $42 Billion wave of new development – up from $23 Billion in 2002! The Gold Coast experiences 277 days of sunshine with an average of 27°C. As more people discover this great lifestyle and the massive new development currently underway, valuable investment opportunities are presenting themselves in such an environment of continued growth and real stability.”
Real Estate
The future of the Gold Coast does indeed look bright: the growth of the area in the last five years has been nothing short of astonishing and this is reflected in the local housing market. Quality beachfront property on the Gold Coast is becoming less affordable and more difficult to obtain due to unwavering and ever increasing demand and a rapidly decreasing supply, where properties are being sold out practically on release.
Luxury agent Pacific Lifestyle Property said recently “The Gold Coast beachfront apartment market is very strong and a lack of supply is driving prices skywards. Demand for such luxury property is compounding beachfront growth rates much faster than their surrounding areas”.
Surfing meccas such as Greenmount Beach and Kirra have been targeted by ambitious developers, eager to stamp their mark on these emerging areas. One project recently released, Nivana by the sea at Kirra Beach sold out its initial release properties in record time, reiterating the desire for beachfront property and the fact that developments are, in some areas, being purchased quicker than they can be built.
Luxury hotel living is also luring buyers in their droves to the Hilton surfers paradise project, with an average of $1.7 million a day being laid on the table for a piece of the Gold Coast high life. The high-rise developer has locked in sales worth $120 million for the first stage after just 10 weeks of marketing!
Marina berths
Property isn’t the only thing in short supply either: the surging demand for marina berths are pushing leasing rates sky high as marina owners cash in on an undersupply situation. Research by Colliers International reported in the Gold Coast Business News shows the imbalance between supply and demand is approaching crisis point, beyond which even wealthy boat owners are finding themselves unable to secure a berth due to the severe shortage of stock. “The Gold Coast remains one of Australia’s favourite boating destinations, however owning a boat and having it moored in a marina over the next decade could prove a lifestyle for a fortunate few,” says Tim Holmes of Colliers International’s Gold Coast office.
“Price may not be a problem for some people, but availability certainly is. Already we have seen how the lack of supply is driving prices up, particularly in major cities like Sydney and Brisbane, where waterfront house and land is diminishing and people are being placed on long waiting lists for public marina berths.
“With current legislation banning further canal developments in Queensland, we can only expect this trend to continue,” say Colliers. In fact, Queensland Transport figures suggest boat ownership in Queensland is growing at a rate of 6% per annum — faster than the State’s population growth. Boat registrations topped 200,000 in January 2006, and a further 100,000 Queensland boat registrations is expected in the next eight years, in line with a trend towards larger and more luxurious watercraft.
Holmes says Gold Coast marina berths are already “far from the cheapest’, with 8m berths ranging from $520 to $800 a month, depending on the facilities and location. Along with real estate and shares, marina berths are a sought-after investment, with many people now looking toward the northern Gold Coast where canal developments are common. Riverfront developments which offer private berth facilities to residents at high quality, secure on-site berths are increasingly popular.”
Airport Expansion
The new look airport will almost double in size, with the capacity to handle twice as many passengers travelling to Australia as current levels. It will feature 36 check-in terminals and a massive shopping and entertainments precinct. The expansion will of course help increase interest in the Gold Coast, providing greater accessibility for tourism and property investment alike.
But with passenger numbers growing at 8%per year, some experts are already warning it could be back to the drawing board soon, as the airport owners map out the next phase for the facility which could include air bridges. The Gold Coast Tourism chairman has announced that the current terminal will be expanded from 14,000sqm to 26,000sqm, with the project due for completion by September 2009.
Gold Coast Airport boss, Paul Donovan, lifted the lid on upgrade plans with the preliminary work set to begin next month:
Paul Donovan said the new airport, which received federal government funding last year to serve the Gold Coast for the next 10 years, “We certainly believe we have the right model for the Gold Coast.” He continued, “Our city is leading the way for Australian destinations and the continued involvement and investment by companies such as Tiger Airways demonstrates a real confidence in the future of our city,”
It´s no surprise to see the airport expanding as last year saw Tiger Air and AirAsia X start flying in and out of the airport, joining Qantas, Jetstar, Jetstar International, Air New Zealand, Virgin Blue and Pacific Blue. In December, a record 374 passengers used the airport, while last year some 3.9 million passed through the terminal. Meanwhile, it was reported recently in the Gold Coast Business News that the AirAsia X service to the Gold Coast from Malaysia will inject around $50 million into the local economy. Based on a proposed three flights per week from Kuala Lumpur, the airline is set to have a significant impact on the region’s business, conference and accommodation sectors. Tourism Minister, Margaret Keech, says, “I’m confident the Gold Coast will be a winner. The Gold Coast is well suited as an initial Australian destination, being a natural fit with AirAsia X’s focus on leisure travellers,”
In fact, in just five years, Gold Coast Airport has jumped two spots in the rankings and is now the sixth busiest airport in Australia in terms of passenger numbers.
AirAsia X is a new, long-haul budget airline set to launch flights in the coming months to cities in China, India, the UK and Europe. Its arrival in Australia coincides with low-cost carrier Tiger Airways, which has timed its inaugural flight into the Coast with the peak summer holiday season in November.
Tiger Air will fly 29 weekly direct services from Melbourne into Rockhampton, Mackay and the Gold Coast, competing with Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar for a slice of the budget carrier market.
Gold Coast Airport chief operating officer Paul Donovan says the inclusion of the Asian airline reinforces the increasing appeal of the Gold Coast in the market place and demonstrates the potential organisations such as Tiger Airways see in the growth of the destination.
All in all, the Gold Coast appears to moving in the right direction on all fronts: the expansion of the airport, growing tourism, a stable economy and a supply of property that is unable to meet with current demand make it a fantastic place to invest as well as live in. Historically, to make the most of any gold rush, you have to be in the right place at the right time. In Gold Coast property terms, that time appears to be now.
Unique Sydney: Sydney in a Nutshell
Sydney is a city of such vast and varied treasures that it’s hard to choose what to see and do especially if you’re on a whirlwind visit. Fortunately Sydney’s a compact place and getting around is easy so you can pack a lot into a quick visit. Here’s a look at how to get the most out of Sydney when you’re short on time.
First, for orientation and delightful eye candy, is a harbour trip. Much of the city’s magnificence derives from its harbour location and a boat over the deep blue waters studded with white sails is a treat for the senses.
Start at Circular Quay in the business district, Sydney’s transport hub and a major city terminal for buses, trains and ferries. You can get to anywhere in Sydney from here. You have the option of a wide range of excellent organised tours or you can just take the regular ferry
Other than showing you Sydney’s prime location as a harbour city, this trip will offer stunning view of the whole city.
Get off the ferry to gaze at the Opera House and then take a stroll through the nearby Royal Botanic Gardens. These expansive gardens are a favourite leisure and picnicking spot for Sydneysiders.
The gardens date back to the foundation of the city when the new colony’s first vegetable patch was established here. Now the gardens house an abundance of flora from the South Pacific and glasshouses contain climbers and trailers from rainforests around the world. The Pyramid contains such Australian native plants as monsoonal and tropical rainforest plants. There’s also a fernery, cactus plots and rose garden. Fauna includes flying foxes cockatoos and ducks quack in the ponds.
After lunch you can sample the sedate artistic ambiance of the Art Gallery of New South Wales then head off for some sun and sand on one of Sydney’s many beaches. To get the pulse of Sydney’s beach culture, you have to visit the daddy of them all, Bondi Beach. After sporting on the sands, savour a drink or meal at one of the beachfront cafes. Then head back into the city as dusk falls and transforms the harbour.
After the raw pleasures of the beach, you have a wide range of options for the evening. You can sample the sophistication of the Opera House, dine at the chic dining spots at Circular Quay, or if you still can’t get enough of the harbour, you can take a sunset walk onto the Harbour Bridge and drink in the lights of the city over the water.
There’s much more to Sydney than this but this quick introduction will set you up for further exploration when time permits. It’s also a unique experience in itself and a great way to get to know this beguiling city on the bay. It might even make you extend your stay. If so, an abundance of Sydney City hotels are available to suit all tastes and pockets.
Holidaying in Germany:Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt

As a holiday destination, Germany has a lot going for it – fashionable and dynamic big cities, quaint towns straight out of the Brothers Grimm, deep forests, fairy-tale castles, and to top it all off, an unequaled range of beers.
Climate
Located at the heart of Europe, Germany has a temperate climate with regional variations. The best weather is from May to October. Winter is freezing and wet.
Berlin:finally in from the cold
The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990 ushered in a new era for this city, long cloak and dagger capital of the cold war. The Berlin of today is a dynamic and creative city with abundant theatre and music with imposing public buildings, splendid museums, sophisticated restaurants, and a host of pubs and clubs.
Transport:getting there and getting around
Berlin is not well served with direct flights. Connections are usually made through hubs like Frankfurt or Amsterdam. You can reach Berlin by bus from most European cities and German trains run like clockwork.
Berlin is walker and cyclist friendly and its underground system, the U/S Bahn is efficient. There’s a new tram system in the eastern parts of the city.
Climate
Rain is possible in any month. The winter months from November to early March, tend to be gloomy with temperatures often dropping below freezing.
Accommodation:from cheap stays to luxury resorts
Check on the internet for the range, location and cost of Berlin hotels
Events:what’s on and what’s hot
Berlin’s calendar is loaded with annual fairs, festivals, concerts and parties.
*The Berlinale (Berlin International Film Festival), the world’s second largest, is held in February.
*April sees Festage (Festival Days) a host of gala concerts and operas held over 10 days.
*Christopher Street Day in June is Berlin’s big gay event.
*August features JazzFest Berlin.
*In November Christmas markets are held throughout the city.
Munich: Bavarian good living
Capital of the southern province of Bavaria, Munich brings to mind images of ledehosen and raised foaming steins of beer. In fact Munich is a sophisticated city that’s home to a multitude of cultural offerings including museums and a lively arts scene.
transport:getting there and getting around
Munich’s Franz-Josef-Strauss Flughafen serves flights bound for Europe, New York and Sydney, either direct or via Frankfurt. It also connects with many German cities daily. Rapid trains connect with all the major German cities as well as Vienna, Prague, Zurich, Rome and Paris.
Getting around Munich is easy via an excellent public transport network which includes an underground and buses. You can also cycle.
climate
May to September are the finest months. April-May and September-October offer sunny weather too. November to March is a time of sub-zero temperatures and sunless skies.
Accommodation:from cheap stays to luxury resorts
Check on the internet for the range, location and cost of Munich hotels
Events:what’s on and what’s hot
Munich features events and festivals all year round.
*Fasching in January is a bawdy six-week-long extravaganza of street parties and balls.
*Lent comes to an end in March with Starkbierzeit, a time for quaffing strong brews
*April is the time for a mini Oktoberfest known as Fruhlingsfest.
*June features the Munich Film Festival.
*Christopher Street Day in July is a three day gay fest, celebrated with street parties.
*Oktoberfest, the world’s premier pub bash, is held, surprisingly, in September.
Frankfurt:big city with a heart
Frankfurt is often seen as a neat and tidy business city with no real soul. In fact Frankfurt spends more on the arts than other city in Europe and there’s always something on at one of its many museums.
transport:getting there and getting around
Frankfurt is the major European rail and air transport hub. Flughafen Frankfurt-am-Main receives flights from all over the world and Hauptbahnhof is Germany’s busiest main train station. Long-distance buses connect Frankfurt with almost all countries in easter and western Europe.
Frankfurt is not a practical city for walking. Luckily, it has a first-class public transport system composed of the city’s bus, tram, S-Bahn and U-Bahn lines. Cycling is also an attractive option as most streets have designated bike lanes.
climate
Typical for Germany with freezing winters with frequent storms. The summer months of June to August are hot and prone to afternoon thunderstorms.
Accommodation:from cheap stays to luxury resorts
Check on the internet for the range, location and cost of Frankfurt hotels
events:what’s on and what’s hot
*February in Frankfurt is marked with the pre-Lent Fastnacht parades.
*In March, there’s the International Music Trade Fair.
*Summer has many events to celebrate Frankfurt’s famed apple wine.
*In July, the riverside springs to life for Museumsuferfest with art, music and exhibitions.
*September/October is the time for the world’s largest Book Fair, and the International Jazz Festival.
Your Single and Have Spotted a Man You’re Considering Dating!
These days, many men and women are finding their perfect romance on the Internet via online dating – and a few unlucky individuals are finding their perfect online dating horror story! The Internet is a faceless communications medium in which any con can be anything they claim to be. This does make it easy for the players to swindle their way into your head and into your heart – but it may also make for the beginnings of a very strong romance. Online dating enables you to get to know your online date more deeply than just a casual meeting at a cafe before committing to a meeting. How do you work out whether you’ve caught a keeper or a throw – back?
So think you’ve found a perfect single man!
You’ve been knocking about in your online dating chat rooms, and just last week this new man came in. His nickname is Brad Pitt, which set your heart a-thumping the moment you saw it, and of course you had to chat with him. “You’re not Brad Pitt, are you”? No? Do you look like him?” He responds in the negative to both, however informs you he looks better than Brad Pitt. He’s a Sydney accountant, with his office in the CBD. And you’re off and running.
Over the course of a couple of weeks you spend ten or so hours chatting with him online. You feel comfortable with this man, and he seems to be telling you all of the inner thoughts and feelings he has. How do you know he’s the real deal? Here are a few ways to find out.
How does his appearance stack up?
For starters, always request pictures. That is pictures, plural. Why?
He may have found a generic photograph of a suitable bloke on the web and downloaded it and put his name on it. Its unlikely that he would have more than one photo to share with you if this was the case. In this modern age of inexpensive digital cameras and fast speed connections for uploading pictures to online dating sites in a flash, there is virtually no reason for a person not to have two, three, a half-dozen photographs of themselves doing different things, from sitting in their lounge to knocking back a schooner at the hotel. If you’re presented with photos that were obviously taken all at one sitting, if they appear to be professional shots, this should raise an alarm bell. If he looks like he’s too perfect in the pictures, this also, should raise the alarms. Real people on singles sites with photos are not usually flawless.
Find out his interests
Does the man seem to be interested in lots of things that you are? Or does he have some interests that you don’t share? If he’s only involved in the interests that you mention first, ask him what other things he enjoys. An answer of “Oh, you know, abit of this, abit of that! Let’s talk more about YOU!” is not acceptable. A real human being has definite likes and dislikes of their own, and is generally willing to share them, often in nauseating detail.
Do you have compatible friends?
You both reside in Sydney or its environs, also you both chat in the Sydney chat room on. It’s fair bet that you’ve got at least one or two online dating buddies in common, if not, then in offline life. Chat to your common friends and ask questions about this man. Be prepared to be let down, but hope for good feedback.
Is this guy consistent?
There are a number of deceptive men using online dating sites who are caught through simple inconsistencies. If he tells you on Monday that he is a big fan of Van Halen, but then on Friday he doesn’t seem to know the lyrics to a song you both talk about, you may have a problem there. If he mentions to you that he’s a big Star Wars fan, however doesn’t remember which planet Luke Skywalker is from, you should probably be cautious. On the other side of the coin, he tells you every part of Luke’s life, and knows how his face became mangled in real life, then its a step in the right direction in the trust department.
Will he allow you to ring him?
If a man you meet online is not willing to give you his home mobile or home number, this may be a sign that he’s got something to hide – for example, he’s married or attached and co habitating with them, and you are possibly on his plans to become his mistress. However is not definitive, as, for example, some guys these days only have mobile phones, also others may be concerned about giving out their contact information to a strangers from the Internet. Online dating can be hard work for both daters.
Conclusion.
The simple facts are that the majority of singles you meet online should be pretty who they say they are, although there’s always one bad apple in every barrel. Check for consistency, believability, and keep basic safety as a priority without being paranoid, you may well end up meeting the date you will marry some day.

Sydney and surrounds
Sydney is on the international map as being one of the most attractive cities in Australia, and with landmarks such as the Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and the beautiful Darling Harbour, it is a great base to see the city and the surrounding countryside.
New South Wales has amazing contrasting landscapes and attractions, and many of these are accessible from the capital city. It seems that every landmark is a starting point for exploring another, and there are a lot of landmarks! Sydney is also a stopover for those driving to the ski slopes south from Canberra, or the Blue Mountains close to an hour inland.
The climate has been likened to Mediterranean temperatures, with no major extremes in weather. Mid summer can sizzle to over 30 degrees, but winter chills are bearable as long as you stay rugged up.
The city centre is a metropolis of blended cultures, foods and sights. The sightseeing options are endless, but most travellers begin on the harbour at the Sydney Opera House. Known as one of the wonders of the world, it is a photographers dream, and at every angle is dazzling.
There is a huge choice of accommodation available in the city and its surrounds.Darling Harbour is also famous for its restaurants and four star hotels that line the stretch of the harbour, and with parks, shops and the IMAX theatre, it is the perfect base a Sydney visit.
Under the just as famous Sydney Harbour Bridge is the Rocks shopping district, which is likened to an outdoor museum as it is one of the oldest features of the city. You will need at least a half day to wander through the alleys and side streets to take in everything the shops have to offer.
On the other side of the harbour is another must do, the Taronga Park Zoo. With an amazing collection of native animals, including lions and giraffes, it is rare to find a zoo with such a view as Darling Harbour and the city skyline. The ferry ride is almost as enjoyable as the zoo, with fantastic sights on all sides. On your return you can’t miss the Sydney Aquarium, also teeming with life under the water, and filled with aquatic displays that will take your breath away.
The Royal Botanic Gardens are within walking distance of the Opera House, and are a perfect place for a picnic lunch, with majestic trees and brilliant flower displays open to the public all year. After lunch you may have the energy towalk to Sydney Tower, the highest point above the citywith 360 degree unforgettable views from the mountains to the sea.
Further out, Manly is one of Sydneys beach suburbs, and skirts the Sydney Harbour National Park. There are lookouts along the coast route, and further along North Head Lookout rewards you with panoramic views of the city.
Driving inland from the city, a popular day trip is to the famous Blue Mountains National Park, known for its amazing rock formation, The Three Sisters. It takes about 90 minutes to get there, and also has camping facilities, swimming holes, fishing and bushwalking trails. One thing to remember is you must bring your own water.
Alternatively, the Royal National park is just over 30km south of Sydney, and holds the impressive title as the worlds second oldest park. Although not large, it has diverse attractions, with walking, cycling tracks, beaches, forests and rich vegetation making this an unforgettable experience.
The beauty of driving instead of touring is you choose where you want to go, and how you do it. Travelling around the Sydney district is just as enjoyable on foot or from the comforts of your vehicle, and it cant be done in just a few days. You will need to either stay for a while to take in all the sights, or plan to come back again as the choices are endless, and the memories will last a lifetime.

Vacation home rentals: Benefits of using the Internet
I have used the Internet to find myself accommodation a couple of times now. Once to San Francisco and more recently to Australia. Both times I received excellent results but only after a great deal of searching and checking. Both times I wanted something comfortable rather than fancy and of course cheap rather than expensive. This meant that the specialist sites that offered holiday or vacation accommodation were not of great value or interest to me. These kinds of sites seem to focus on the high end of the market and will have you believe nothing is available for less than $1,000 a week.
Instead, I concentrated on the standard rental websites. That is, local agents that rent a wide range of accommodation. Such are as easily accessible nowadays anywhere in the world as those around the corner. What you need to do is use the Internet to find out where you want to be and then track down the local agents. In the case of San Francisco I wanted to be near the Berkeley campus and in Australia in a bush setting but within 2-3 hours of Sydney. Google Earth is also helpful once you begin to narrow things a bit.
But local agents want you to rent for 6 months! you ask. Usually I reply. But with hundreds of listings they always have a few that are short-term and more importantly don’t ask more than the average rent. Average rent is usually about half the going rent for accommodation listed as ‘vacation’ properties.
So what did I end up with? In the case of San Francisco I spent a month in a lovely one bedroom apartment – a subdivision of an old house – about 10-15 mins walk from UCB and even closer to the BART station. I obtained this through a local summer rentals agency that put me in touch with the owner directly. A few emails and a bank transfer handled the deposit. The rest of the rent was paid on arrival in cash.
In Australia, I ended up in a three bed-room house set on a mountain side over looking spectacular farming country and down to the coast. It was about 10 mins drive from a lovely little town called Berry and about 2 hours from Sydney. A local agent treated the month lease as a normal lease arrangement, which meant I had to pay a bond. But in Australia that is a very straightforward and government regulated business.
So overall I would happily use the Internet but would prefer to go local – time consuming – but fun to research what you want and get a great deal.
